The Sun & 1
The One vibration is an important force in your life if your life lesson number or day of birth is one or reduces to one.
The following numbers carry the sun’s energy: 1, 10, 19, 28, 37, 46, 55, 64, 73, 82, and 91.
The Sun/1 is of primary importance to you if one of the numbers in this list is your life lesson or life path number. The highest possible combination of numbers in this list for a Lifepath is 55. It is also of importance to you if your day of birth is any one of these numbers up to, and including the number 28.
The 1 pattern is of secondary importance if any of these numbers are found in your name. The reason it’s of secondary importance because while your name is important, your name can always be changed. Your date of birth cannot be noted.
The Sun/1 gives us an exuberant, enthusiastic nature. This energy is expressed positively as strong, firm, decisive, self-starting, and although not cuddly, nurturing in its own way.
In numerology, the Sun/1 has easy relationships with:
- The Moon/2
- Jupiter/3
- March/9
The Sun and 1 have a challenging relationship with:
- Rahu/4
- Venus/6
- Ketu/7
- Saturn/8
They have a neutral relationship with:
- Mercury/5
This does not mean that the aspects that formed between number one and these other numbers are bad. Some of the best results come from challenging aspects. Remember, when everyone gets along, there is little growth or change.
The Sun/1 represents purifying, hot energy. In numerology, the Sun can also influence the intellect. Some people are intelligent and can be extroverted, willful, and take charge. They can also be very immature, bossy, and aggressive. They’re inspired, though, and magnetic — we love to be around them. A balanced Sun person makes everyone around them feel safe to be themselves.
In the Tarot, The magician occupies the first card, not The Sun, even though that is the planetary correspondent of the 1 number force. The Sun is the 19th card, but this reduces to 1. Of course, The Magician is ruled by Mercury, who is air and earth. So how can that be?
When you first start to study numbers, their energies are all separated: 1 is this, 2 is that, and so on. When you examine the numbers as a spectrum that is visualized as a circle without a defined beginning or end and not as a line or a collection of separate parts, you find quite a bit of overlap that just makes sense one day.
The Magician is the journeyman. He’s got some skill, and what he lacks in knowledge, he makes up for with enthusiasm and forward thinking. He’s got all this great information he learned to put to use, and he can’t wait to pass it on, and you’re gonna love it – and that’s very Sun-like.
In the Marseille Tarot, Le Bateleur represents a few important aspects of medieval life that still apply to our modern world.
- The first function Le Bateleur fills is in the guise of Mercury, the guide to the traveler. Regarding the pilgrimage of the soul, the idea that the Major Arcana tells the story of one’s incarnation and journey through life, Le Bateleur is waiting for us at the crossroads to point us in the right direction at the beginning of our lives. The other name for Mercury is Hermes, and the signposts at crossroads all over ancient Roman-occupied Europe were referred to as herms . This is the first crossroads deity we encounter in the Major Arcana, although it will not be the last.
- The second function that Le Bateleur fills is the busker, the street magician, fortune-teller, and the lowest-ranked street performer. He stands behind his table, bedeviling passersby with illusions and tricks, ultimately relieving them of some of their money. He is Mercury The Trickster, an intellectual who knows more than you and will put his knowledge and your lack thereof on full display. His tools represent command of the elements (air, fire, water, earth) and also states of differentiated consciousness (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual).
- Le Bateleur’s third function is that of the child. Mercury is youthful and spirited; the soul experiencing this journey has just been born into corporeal existence. He is the child, and in the following few cards, we will meet his family members, those responsible for helping him become a productive member of society.
The Magician consciously creates reality by directing his will and imagination. He is an alchemist, making the intangible into the tangible. He has enthusiasm and gets things kicked off. As Mercury, he symbolizes creative intelligence and wit. As an emanation of the 1/Sun vibration, he is new beginnings and discoveries. inspiration, and independence. This card is one of those many times you will see where the cards, numbers, and planets are not always matchy-matchy; rather, they lay together like bricks.
When this card appears in a reading, magick is at work in your life. Weird synchronicities occur that expose, however briefly, the order that underlies the chaos you experience. As The Fool, you are learning how to function in the world, and where this card shows itself may be an area where you need more significant support, as Le Bateleur is also a child in the medieval family structure of Le Marseille.
Regarding questions related to work or career, you may be experiencing new starts. Perhaps it is a promotion at work or a whole new job elsewhere. Management gives you the go-ahead if you’re trying to get a new project off the ground. The money suddenly appears in the budget for new furniture or a new computer. However, Le Bateleur keeps his cards close to his chest, and the house never loses – be cautious around clients and coworkers. Don’t unintentionally hand your competition any ammunition. You can still be your happy, successful self, but keep your eyes open – be wary of manipulation and flattery.
This card is not the most romantic when it comes to questions about love. If you meet someone new, it can indicate that the circumstances will be strange or that you’ll meet unconventionally. Online meetings used to be weird and different, but now they’re normal. Meeting people in person is the new weird.
Number 1 energy is great for expanding your net and kicking relationships off to an exciting start, but it’s not great continuing energy and makes for a lousy finish. It’s also a commitment-phobic energy. If you meet someone during a transit of any of the 1 vibrations or pull this card as an answer, understand that they may be here for a good time but not necessarily a long time. It could also indicate a lot of traveling back and forth because, you know, The Magician is a busker, and buskers travel. They are itinerant performers, always on the move.
This card can show a study period relating to subjects you find interesting. The Magician likes to flit from subject to subject, though – like starting out with knitting and then suddenly he’s all about the needle felting, then the crochet, oh look, there’s an embroidery kit – and now he’s got a basement full of yarn, a bunch of half-finished beginner projects, and he’s broke. The Magician can be a bit of a dilettante that way.
He can be rather averse to sitting still for long periods of time unless something piques his interest, so this may be just a superficial survey of one or more subjects at first. This card can also indicate that you should communicate with others about your journey, such as joining a study group or creating a social media account to share your experiences.

The Wheel of Fortune/10 gives us another look at the number one energy pattern. Here, the addition of zero shifts the one energy. Zero is infinity. It is a symbol of cycles and eternity. The wheel that spins is a circle like zero. It represents the changing cycles and the passage of time in the seasons, all part of the solar year, which is often represented as a wheel, circle, or solar cross.
In the Marseille Tarot, when we translate this card’s name, we do not get “Wheel of Fortune;” we get “Fortune’s Wheel,” which is not quite the same. It is not a gambler’s wheel or the spinning of “Lady Luck”; it is a torture device that one is strapped onto and slowly turned for the perverse amusement of the townsfolk. This torture is carried out all day until dark when the victim, who has endured the breaking of most of his bones, is finally put out of his misery if he didn’t die earlier.
When 1 becomes 10, there is faith, belief, and fame. Although it is not regarded as a karmic number, ten is sensitive to karma. One is considered a fortunate influence, and zero is considered unfortunate. It brings upheaval and struggle. This bestows confidence when expressed well and indecision when stifled. The 10/1 pattern is challenging because it calls in the unknown and forces people to deal with things head-on when they have little to no reference. The mastery that comes from these challenges can make people shine brightly. You don’t have to win every time to master the Wheel of Fortune, but you do have to show up and get dirty. The good news is that periods represented by the number ten or the Tarot card are very short in duration.
In “On The Conversation of Philosophy,” Roman and statesman philosopher Boethius’ conversations with Lady Philosophy explore the nature of happiness, wisdom, and fortune. Lady Philosophy personifies wisdom. She reinforces the message of The Magician: everything is an illusion. Power, wealth, love, fame, and the happiness they seem to create are all illusions. If we are to find the Kingdom of Heaven within, we have to let go of our attachments to these illusions.
Lady Philosophy implores Boethius to understand that his bad fortune was truly a gift, for it dispelled illusion. She explains that 8/Justice, 9/Hermit (Time), and 10/Fortune (Chance) were the greatest friends of The Fool on his journey. They helped him get rid of illusions. so that he can see his place in the universe. She then discusses the allure and false promise of good fortune, maintaining that ill fortune brings us back to our true good and authentic selves. By being reshaped on Fortune’s Wheel, The Fool becomes aware that nothing external can truly bring him joy.
The Wheel brings change and upheaval, sometimes good, sometimes bad, and leaves as quickly as it shows up. It’s a time to lean into risk and opportunity. Events have been set into motion, and you can either sit in the house, eat chips, and watch TV, or jump right in and see where the journey takes you. This card supports unconventional ideas and complete shifts in lifestyle and belief systems – everything changes in a flash. It’s an opportunity to discover the gifts that Lady Philosophy talks about and seek your true path.
The appearance of this card might indicate that you’ve reached a turning point. Unexpected events and synchronicities can steer you onto a new life road. That could look like a whole new job or career change. Don’t let fear slow you down; try to relax into this and go with the flow as best as you can.
Resistance is futile; things blow wide open once you rip the bandaid off. The things that need to end that you’re hedging on ending – done, gone, poof! No more unfulfilling relationships or jobs – now you’re free. If your timing has been off, if you’ve been clapping on 1 and 3, you get your groove back.
The number 10 is a 1 one with a purse. It’s got some baggage that it’s holding onto. When we pass the point of the 9, the thing is done. It’s over. You’re right back to 1, beginning all over again. If you land on 10 instead, you’re holding onto something. You’re delaying the inevitable; you’re hesitating. That is what attachment does – it keeps us feeling caged and stuck while convincing us that we’re happy – this is as good as it’ll ever get, so let’s stay right here where it’s safe.
Freedom can be scary, and sometimes liberation can hurt. Now, you have room in your life for new things, people, situations, career paths – whatever has changed. You’re getting a do-over. When the dust settles, you will better understand who you are and your place under the sun. You’ll realize that there is more to your life than your external world and that it can fall away at any moment.
The lessons of 10/1 as a transit in your life are similar. You become highly aware of yourself and begin to move more freely. It’s like you suddenly own the room and no longer care if anyone thinks you’re eccentric or strange. You start becoming your own person, more comfortable in your skin. This can be an easy transition if you are good with change, but if you aren’t, the journey to the center of you might feel the way a three-year-old being dragged to daycare sounds.
Things that you might have accepted, thinking, “That’s just how it is,” will infuriate and frustrate you now. If you were previously a permissive individual, that won’t fly anymore – you’ll become more discriminating and, dare I say it, self-centered. This is a significant transit when it occurs as a personal year because people achieve greater self-expression and become freer and more independent.

The nineteen pattern, or the Sun Tarot card, is considered a karmic force in numerology. This happy and joyful-looking card depicts two children playing in a walled garden. The word “paradise” comes from an Old Iranian word meaning “walled enclosure.” It entered English via the French word “paradis.” We all want to return to this place, the realm of the “All Love” we experienced before reincarnating.
Children speak of this place with great ease because they can still remember it, although they may experience difficulty articulating it in a way that makes sense to the big people listening. Paradise, or heaven, is that dim echo in the back of your head, that foggy reminder that before “all of this” – **gestures at the dumpster fire** – there was true happiness, a golden age where everyone and everything just worked out and life was good. There is no “Golden Age” that we can hearken back to. As Billy Joel sang in the 1980s, we didn’t start the fire — it’s always been burning in the background. They are trying to remember Paradise. As adults, we process that vague memory through so many filters that our brain plays the telephone game with it.
The Sun card represents a state where our heart center is wide open and unburdened by worldly concerns. In this state, we can experience awareness of all the worlds and our connection to them. When we achieve this state, we can think about it and watch whatever it is become a reality before our very eyes.
In my Marseille deck, the sex of the two children isn’t immediately obvious. They’re similar to the androgynous divine twins of so many world myths. Looking closely, I can see that the child on the left is more female than the child on the right because she has some breast development. The child on the left puts her hand out over her brother’s heart chakra. He places his hand against the back of her neck. It has been postulated that he is touching C1, the “Atlas” vertebrae.” Could her hand indicate that her brother’s heart is open, and could his hand show that she has support so as not to carry the world on her shoulders? They both wear red ribbons around their throats. In some traditions, such as the Tantric and Ayurvedic, the throat is known as “the gateway of the gods,” where the memory of our dreams is housed.
The garden gate is low, and we are almost at the end of the Major Arcana. The process of remembering who we really are is nearly complete. The barriers are starting to dissolve, as evidenced by the short wall that separates us from Paradise. We are almost there! This is the final development, and for those who are still subject to the emotional upheaval of La Roue and require healing, this can be a welcome card to draw.
The number 19 is composed of 1/Sun and 9/Mars. Karmic 19/1 is considered both malefic and benefic, although traditionally, it was seen as strictly malefic as all karmic numbers were. People with strong 19s in their charts are brimming with enthusiasm, inspiration, and eagerness. They are successful in virtually everything they do because they will not give up. The Sun bestows inspiration and light, while Mars fuels their engine. The Sun/1 helps them to make the right decisions and grow in wisdom. Mars/9 helps them to confront adversity head-on.
On a crappy day, that 9/Mars energy can become very short-tempered and impatient. People can become poor communicators that blow up when they are misunderstood. The good news is their tantrums are short-lived, and the 1/Sun ensures they won’t bring many grudges forward. However, those of us in the wake of those outbursts have crystal clear memories. An unbalanced or poorly expressed 19/1 could find themselves uninvited to the ladybug picnic for a long time.
19/1 energy also throws light on everything. The Sun illuminates and enlightens. Under the light of the Sun, nothing can hide. There are no secrets. This way, the karmic 19/1 can be malefic because everything is brought forward under the Sun’s influence. The truth will set you free, but first, it will piss you off.
My pet theory is that the “karmic” numbers in numerology relate to planetary conjunctions that are “combust” in astrology. This is the first karmic number we are looking at because it reduces to 1, although ironically, it is the last of the karmic numbers. If we think of the 19/1 vibration as being similar to the conjunction of the Sun and Mars, where Mars is combust, then we can see the energy of Mars being repressed. This could certainly produce the “bad luck” that the old books used to speak of: failed marriages and businesses, an inability to stand up for yourself, and suffering due to overattachment to the things of this world and a lack of spiritual connection.
Somewhere along the way, this number force was rewritten as a “karmic blessing” number, and this can refer to what is called the “cazimi” when Mars is in a tight 1-degree conjunction. Instead of being suppressive, this quick and close conjunction is quite positive. Cazimi comes from an old Arabic word that means “as if in the heart.” In cazimi, the energy shifts, and a profound new cycle is initiated. It can be a time of great rebirth, of being called into action to do great work – for example, an artist might have an experience that results in creating a masterpiece. It can be a time to transmute pain into strength by confronting and healing old wounds, clearing the old karmic slate, and putting things right. It can also trigger an existential crisis that forces you to put your money where your mouth is and examine your identity and self-perception.
But karmic numbers being similar to planets being combust is just my pet theory.
When The Sun appears in a reading, consider it a portal opening in your life and good things emerging from it. This card reflects achievement, success, wealth, happiness, and rebirth. It reflects a purifying force that cleanses and illuminates everything like the sun’s rays.
Like the other cards, whose numerical values are reduced to 1, this card deals with leadership. Often, it is about leading large groups or movements. It also relates to the sign of Leo, so it can deal with themes like being adored, put on a pedestal, and becoming an arrogant little turd. When this card is not well-supported, or the question has a negative slant, the ego rules and obsessions with things like money and status or using people come up for review.
Generally speaking, though, you feel particularly empowered during the periods indicated by this card. Your path is clear, and you’re more aligned with your goals than ever. You aren’t poverty-minded; you believe in yourself and share the bounty. You say yes to new people, places, and opportunities. This creates a spillover effect, and new doors keep opening for you. Everything just keeps coming up roses — you wish it and POOF! It happens.
